Digital community managers play a key role in organisations that interact and communicate with their customers and end-user through online platforms, for example the videogame industry and software providers. They are employed in small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as large organisations.
The broad purpose is to instigate and facilitate direct communication online between the end-user or customer and the organisation. The customers who are communicating with the organisation are referred to as āthe community’. Digital community managers are often the online public face for an organisation, implementing an essential part of its communication strategy to support business objectives. They deliver information and useful ideas from the community back to their organisation and are the āeyes and earsā of the organisation.
Digital community managers are part of a team developing and implementing an overall communication strategy. They work autonomously but will interact with other internal departments including public relations, marketing, production and communication.
The nature of the work is autonomous as online communication is fast moving and often needs to be timely without requiring supervision. Digital community manager roles generally have a high degree of responsibility and need to exercise good judgement for their own work within the parameters defined by their organisation, although at this level they are likely to have a reporting line.
